Pension verification for every Nigerian pensioner

The I AM ALIVE confirmation system for PTAD, serving over 5 million pensioners, built for people who are elderly, not technical, and often on a bad connection.

The problem

Pension systems need periodic proof that the recipient is still alive. Historically that meant asking elderly people to physically show up at an office. Getting it wrong is costly in both directions: you either keep paying a claim that should have stopped, or you stop one belonging to someone who badly needs it.

Any digital replacement has to work for users who are old, not technical, and frequently on a poor connection. That rules out most of the obvious answers.

What I did

I built the backend around identity verification, treating the confirmation event itself as the thing the system exists to record accurately.

I designed for a bad network and an unfamiliar user throughout, which pushes complexity onto the server and keeps the client as simple as it can be.

What changed

The system is live at iamalive.ptad.gov.ng, serving more than 5 million pensioners nationwide.
